Location: Newton Public Library, 223 E 7th Street, Newton, Kansas
Time Commitment: Approximately 1–2 hours per month
Schedule: Monthly, based on delivery timing and volunteer availability

Position Overview

United Way of Harvey and Marion Counties is seeking a dependable monthly volunteer to help keep essential personal care and over-the-counter health items available to community members at the Newton Public Library.

The volunteer will support two community resources:

  • The Care Closet, a partnership between Newton Public Library, United Way of Harvey and Marion Counties, and Health Ministries Clinic, with ongoing support from Simply Hygiene.
  • The Over-the-Counter Medicine Cabinet, a partnership between United Way of Harvey and Marion Counties and Cairn Health, located within the Resource Navigation office at the Newton Public Library.

These resources help individuals and families access basic hygiene products and common over-the-counter medications at no cost.

Volunteer Responsibilities

  • Assist with receiving monthly deliveries of hygiene products and other supplies.
  • Unpack, sort, organize, and stock items in the Care Closet.
  • Check inventory levels and identify items that are running low.
  • Stock and organize the Over-the-Counter Medicine Cabinet.
  • Check expiration dates and notify staff of expired, damaged, or low-stock items.
  • Keep storage and shelving areas clean, orderly, and easy to access.
  • Communicate with United Way staff about inventory needs or concerns.
  • Maintain confidentiality and respect the dignity of individuals using these resources.

Qualifications

The ideal volunteer is:

  • Dependable, organized, and attentive to detail.
  • Comfortable working independently after receiving initial training.
  • Able to follow inventory, stocking, and safety procedures.
  • Respectful and supportive of people from all backgrounds and circumstances.
  • Available for a consistent monthly commitment.
  • Comfortable lifting and carrying boxes weighing approximately 20–30 pounds, with accommodations available as needed.

Training and Support

The volunteer will receive an orientation to the Care Closet, OTC Medicine Cabinet, inventory process, safety expectations, and partner organizations. United Way staff will remain available to answer questions and provide support.
