OVM invites the community to act with restorative practices by corresponding with an incarcerated person. Many people in prison want to better themselves, and can benefit from consistent support from someone with a fresh outside perspective.

Staff will match you with an inmate from our waiting list. You commit to write at least one letter per month for at least one year. If for any reason you decide you do not want to write after all, please let us know as soon as possible! One letter a month may seem like a small thing but that envelope is significant to an inmate who has limited contact with the outside community. Your commitment says, “I care; you can depend on me.”

Volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Volunteers should be caring, relational people who value and foster friendship.

Your goal is to provide support and friendship during incarceration. Volunteers are not expected to be therapists, financiers, legal advisors, or parole sponsors. They are friends who enjoy wholesome relationships and who like to see and encourage good in others.

The pen pal relationship facilitated by OVM ends with the incarcerated person’s release from prison. Our experience has shown that this offers safety and healthier relationships both for our volunteers and for the residents. We encourage prison residents to navigate the transition to public life within established re-entry programs. We can help provide information about available re-entry resources if you like.

You can communicate via postal mail or electronic mail. You may opt to use OVM's office address as an intermediary, to protect the privacy of your home address.
We will provide training and support, including suggestions for how to write to establish common ground, and more detailed policies & procedures.

Represent your neighborhood, support a victim, and interface with an offender to bring resolution for all in a conflict.

OVM began offering Neighborhood Accountability Boards (NAB) in 2017. In these restorative circles, offenders meet with community members to discuss their situation. Community members are not a jury, but rather concerned neighbors with the interest of the victim, offender, and whole community in mind.

NAB encourages participants to take responsibility for their actions, striving to make decisions that will positively contribute to the community. In many cases a NAB is an alternative for a juvenile offender who would otherwise face charges in the justice system.

NAB meetings are scheduled according to participants' schedule availability, are sometimes performed via videoconference if preferred by participants, and usually last about an hour. Typically there is only one NAB meeting per case.

M-2 is a partnership program with Hutchinson Correctional Facility that "matches two" - a volunteer visitor from the community with a resident in prison - for monthly visits.

Since 1973, M-2 has helped to build relationships between folks on the inside and outside of prison walls. Visitors and residents meet for an hour and a half each month to talk, share food and encouragement. This simple act of connection demonstrates that all are made in the image of God and worthy of relationship and support.

We are seeking compassionate individuals to volunteer to groom Caring Hands Humane Society resident pets. As a pet groomer, you will be responsible for brushing or washing our pets . 

We have around 40 cats and 40 dogs that require grooming and it takes a team of people to keep our animals clean during their stay. For cat grooming, you help by brushing the cat's winter coats away while getting some one-on-one love from our cats. For dog grooming, you help by spending a couple hours brushing or bathing our fluffy or stinky dogs. They may need nails trimmed or their ears cleaned out.

This is an essential role in keeping our resident pets comfortable and healthy, but also helps get them adopted. Clean and groomed animals are the most attractive and appealing to potential adopters. With your help we cat get all our resident pets into great homes!

We are seeking compassionate individuals to volunteer as dog walkers for our dog residents at Caring Hands Humane Society. As a dog walker, you will be responsible for walking the dogs around our fenced yard.

We have around 40 dogs that benefit from going outside multiple times everyday. It takes a team of people to get our dogs out for some fresh air! You help by getting our dogs their daily exercise and play time by taking them out in our fenced area. Dogs can also be off leash in our play pens, where they are free to romp! This is an essential role in keeping our dogs active, comfortable, and mentally stimulated while waiting for their forever homes.

Hours needed:
Morning: 10:00 am -12:00 pm
Afternoon: 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
(Hours are flexible during open hours)

The Harvey County Department on Aging is seeking volunteers (55+) to co-coach A Matter of Balance (AMOB), an evidence-based program designed to help older adults prevent falls, reduce fear of falling, and stay active.

We are seeking compassionate individuals to volunteer as snack makers for our residents. As a snack maker, you will be responsible for making daily snack items for our dogs. All these items are referred to as "enrichment." This is an essential role in keeping our dogs happy, energized, and mentally stimulated while waiting for their forever homes. 

Our animals get a different enrichment item every day. These items can be made ahead of time and frozen, but it works best to have fresher snacks made the night before they get handed out.

This position is one where you would come volunteer at Heartland on a reoccurring basis. You would do light cleaning, such as vacuuming, sweeping, moping, and organizing. You could also help with various administrative and clerical tasks as assigned by the front desk.

These lessons range from prenatal development to healthy personal boundaries, making each appointment no longer than one hour in length. Training will be provided before meeting with clients.

Safehope is looking for someone who enjoys cooking.  We need someone to make a meal for our support group the 1st Monday of each month.  The meal should be able to feed 20 people.  A Safehope staff person will meet you at the location to transfer the meal from your vehicle to the meeting area.

A mentor volunteer with Later@ThePorch is someone who enjoys hanging out with middle school grade students. This person needs to be engaging, caring, and willing to work in a loud but fun environment! 

When you volunteer with us, you will get the opportunity to play games with students such as air hockey, ping pong, video games, and board games. We genuinely get to just hang out with a bunch of fun 5th and 6th graders.
